FLORIDA TODAY: Holmes makes list, Leapfrog/Castlight Maternity Care Study
Health First’s Holmes Regional Medical Center, Melbourne, recently was recognized as one of 12 Florida hospitals for “fully meeting standard” maternity care.
The “2016 Maternity Care Report” by The Leapfrog Group and Castlight Health analyzed quality and improvements of hospitals in reducing maternity care risk in women ages 19 to 44. The first study of its kind, looked at Cesarean Section rates by hospital.
“It is crucial for Florida hospitals – and hospitals nationwide – to work toward a goal of reducing unnecessary C-sections and early medical interventions during maternity care,” said Florida Health Care Coalition President and CEO Karen van Caulil. “Early medical intervention causes preventable risk to mother and baby and can be avoided in most cases.”
The report examines the percentage of first-time mothers giving birth to a single baby (i.e., no twins or other multiples) at term (at least 37 weeks gestation), in the head-down position.
