The Leapfrog Group Announces 2016 Top Hospital Recipients, 11 Florida Hospitals
11 Florida Hospitals Receive National
Recognition in Washington, D.C.
ORLANDO, Fla. (December 8, 2016) – On December 6, The Leapfrog Group, the nation’s premier advocate of hospital transparency, announced its 2016 Top Hospitals at their Annual Meeting & Top Hospital Awards Ceremony in Washington, D.C., where 11 Florida Hospitals were among those honored.
The Top Hospital Awards are presented to select hospitals across the nation that meet Leapfrog’s rigorous quality and safety standards. As of November 30, 2016, more than 1,800 hospitals participated in the most recent annual 2016 Leapfrog Hospital Survey and the results are publicly reported for use by Leapfrog’s constituency of employers and other purchasers, as well as their employees and the public at large.
There were substantial changes to the methodology this year to ensure that only the “best of the best” were identified. Two new award categories were also introduced, “Top Teaching Hospital” and “Top General Hospital.” Florida had three Top Children’s Hospitals, seven Top General Hospitals and one Top Teaching Hospitals this year.
The 2016 Top Florida Hospitals are:

“We are honored to have been able to present 11 of Florida’s highest quality hospitals with this prestigious national award today,” said Florida Health Care Coalition President and CEO Karen van Caulil. “These hospitals raise the bar for industry standards and provide an admirable example for other facilities to follow.”
Overall, Top Hospitals tend to have lower infection rates, higher survival rates for high-risk procedures, decreased length of stay and fewer readmissions. Other metrics for Top Hospitals are tied to excellence in maternity care, evidence of minimal medication errors and appropriate staffing to ensure quality of care.
This year, a total of 115 Top Hospitals from across the country are being honored. Of those, 9 were recognized as Top Children’s Hospitals, 56 have been named Top General Hospitals, 21 were named Top Rural Hospitals, and 29 were named Top Teaching Hospitals.
“Hospitals that receive the Top Hospital distinction have demonstrated excellence at providing safe and high quality care,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “We recognize that staff throughout the entire hospital share this commitment and congratulate every person who contributed to their hospital’s success.”
